The Reset I Desperately Needed

If you're a business owner or mom, you know the feeling.
The guilt of stepping away. The worry that orders won't get done, emails won't get answered fast enough, opportunities might be missed while you're gone. We convince ourselves our business needs us every second of every day.
A few weeks ago, I was running on empty.
Between my full-time job, The Painted Button, family responsibilities, and everything else life throws our way... I was exhausted. We had a family vacation to Florida planned, and honestly, it became the thing that kept me going. Sixteen days completely off from both jobs. It felt like a lifeline.
As business owners and moms, self-care is almost always the first thing we push aside. We tell ourselves we'll rest after the next event. After the next big order. After the next busy season. The problem is there's always another event. Another order. Another busy season.
Sometimes stepping away doesn't feel like what your business needs.
But it might be exactly what your mental health needs.
What Two Weeks Off Actually Looked Like
I'm writing this slightly sunburned and still on vacation, and I feel lighter than I have in months.
I've laughed more. Relaxed more. Spent real time with my family without constantly thinking about what needed to happen next. My husband and I both slowed down. We made memories. We were present instead of just moving from one responsibility to the next.
But the biggest reset for me wasn't the beach or the sunshine.
It was the time with my kids.
As moms, we're so used to carrying the mental load that even during family time, we're already thinking about what comes next. This vacation gave me the chance to just be Mom. Not the employee. Not the business owner. Not the person juggling a hundred things at once. Just Mom.
Watching them experience new things. Seeing the excitement on their faces over things that feel small to us. Hearing their laughter every single day. Being fully present for all of it... it reminded me why I work so hard in the first place.
The late nights. The busy seasons. The constant juggling. It all comes back to them.
The Person Holding It Down
While I've been gone, my business partner and mom has held down the fort.
She always does. She's the calm, steady presence that keeps everything moving when I need to step back and breathe. Knowing things were in good hands is what let me actually unplug this time. That's one of the many reasons I'm so thankful to have her by my side, in business and in life.
You Can't Pour From an Empty Cup
I think a lot of us forget that.
Your business deserves your passion, your creativity, your energy. But those things need to be refilled. Rest isn't quitting. It's not falling behind. It's not being lazy. It's maintenance. For your mind. For your relationships. For your future self.
The work will still be there when you get back.
The emails. The orders. The to-do list that never actually ends. It'll all be waiting.
But after some sunshine, a lot of laughter, and time with the people who matter most... you come back with a clearer mind and a fuller heart. And a renewed reminder of why you started in the first place.
Sometimes that's exactly the reset you needed.
